In 2004, Pepsi released a commercial featuring Pink, Britney Spears, and Beyonce, three queens singing a cover of Queen’s hit “We Will Rock You” in full gladiator gear in front of Emperor Enrique Iglesias. That same year, My Chemical Romance released a cover of Queen’s “Under Pressure.” In 2009, the Muppets tried their hands at “Bohemian Rhapsody.” Glee covered Queen throughout the show, Weird Al Yankovic parodied Queen in 1993, and Kanye West performed his “Bohemian Rhapsod’Ye” at Glastonbury Music Festival in 2015.

There’s no question that Queen’s music is deeply embedded into the fabric of popular culture, and this has been the case since their inception. They pushed boundaries, made waves, and revolutionized the musical standard to cross cultural and generational boundaries and sustain their status as the champions of music. I have vivid memories of my family erupting into “We Are the Champions” every time a football team of their choice won a match, arms draped over each other’s shoulders, decked out in team gear. For a band that formed almost 50 years ago, it’s clear that their legacy is alive and well in 2018.

This year, Bohemian Rhapsody comes out, giving audiences around the world insight into the band’s journey to find their sound and ultimately create some of the greatest hits of all time. Until then, we have 11 facts about Queen to tide you over.

Bohemian Rhapsody hits theatres on November 2nd.
