11 TV soundtracks that solidified their shows’ cultural influence

Game of Thrones isn't the monster hit to wear its love of music on its armored sleeve.

As Game of Thrones plows through its final season and viewers prepare to bid Westeros adieu, the show has graced us with a parting gift that, surprisingly enough, is free of any grisly fantasy deaths. For The Throne, out today, is a volume of music inspired by the show, and features songs from decidedly non-medieval artists ranging from A$AP Rocky to Rosalía.

Despite Thrones taking place in another world where, as far as we can tell, pop superstardom is virtually nonexistent, this isn’t the first time the show has flexed its musical muscle when it comes to Earthly tunes – in addition to dropping a cryptic playlist in advance of the final season’s premiere, the show has also featured the National’s recording of “The Rains of Castamere” back in 2012, along with an appearance from some wayward bard named Ed Sheeran in the Season 7 finale.

Game of Thrones isn’t the first show to wear its love of music on its armored sleeve, and above, we’ve rounded up 11 other soundtracks from shows that weren’t afraid to define themselves through their expert song choices.
