From the patchwork constellation of punk innovators to the gravity-defying pomp of glam’s glitz, rock music has always kept a space open for outsiders to come in and rise to the top. Few figures are more singular in their embodiment of this concept than Farokh Bulsara: the queer, Persian transplant who soon after his arrival in the U.K. would ascend to superstardom—and redefine the very concept of a rockstar—as Freddie Mercury, the iconic frontman of Queen.

The new Queen biopic, Bohemian Rhapsody, in theatres November 2nd, chronicles the tribulations and triumphs of the legendary London band; Freddie Mercury’s too short, one-of-a-kind life; and the immense, lasting legacy of Queen. While the band has undergone several transformations, the seeds of Queen’s singular approach to music and performance have continued to blossom in musical disciples from an equally diverse range of eras and genres. We took a moment to break down 19 artists and bands who owe their origin stories or big breaks to Queen.

Bohemian Rhapsody hits theatres on November 2nd.
