Beyoncé, Aaliyah, and Lisa “Left Eye” Lopes auditioned to be in Josie and the Pussycats

2001's popular teen musical could've looked (and sounded) a lot different.

Back in 2001, a little movie called Josie and the Pussycats was released, starring the acting talents of notable early-aughts talents  Rachael Leigh Cook, Tara Reid, and Rosario Dawson in the roles of the famous comic band. The film was especially notable for its above-average soundtrack, which featured the vocals of Letters To Cleo’s Kay Hanley. This week, the cast reunited to celebrate the sweet 16th anniversary of the movie at a special event in Los Angeles, where it was revealed that the movie could’ve been even more musical: Beyoncé, Aaliyah, and Lisa “Left Eye” Lopes from TLC all auditioned for the film.

“We read Left Eye twice,” co-director Harry Elfont told Billboard about the casting process back in 2000. “She really wanted to play the part. Beyoncé was really quiet and shy. Who knew? It was a comedy and Aaliyah was more serious and thoughtful.” The interview also has a cool bit of Cancon trivia: Bif Naked contributed background vocals to songs featured in the film.

Of course, it has to be stated that both Aaliyah and Left Eye unexpectedly passed away in accidents since the film’s release (in 2001, in a plane crash, and 2002, in a car crash, respectively). That doesn’t necessarily prove anything regarding Josie and the Pussycats being a cursed project, but it doesn’t raise the question. Stay safe out there, Bey.
