Jay-Z’s upcoming Trayvon Martin docuseries gets a trailer

It will be titled “Rest in Power: The Trayvon Martin Story.”

July 6, 2018

There’s a glut of true crime docuseries out there to binge, but perhaps none of them are more relevant to our times than the upcoming Rest in Power, a Jay-Z-produced look at the killing of Trayvon Martin that its home channel the Paramount Network describes as “a story about race, politics, power, money and the U.S. criminal justice system.” The 2012 death of Martin, 17 and unarmed, acted as a major catalyst in bringing major contemporary talking points such as gun control and racial issues to the forefront of wider cultural conversations, with Martin’s killing playing a major influence in the emergence of the Black Lives Matter movement.

Rest in Power drops after a number of controversies between the series’ production and Trayvon’s killer George Zimmerman, with Zimmerman accusing production of harassing him and his family and threatening that “anyone who fucks with my parents will be fed to an alligator,” in addition to Zimmerman being charged with stalking a private investigator hired by the series’ production staff (don’t worry though, Jay-Z made sure to hit him back with a diss verse).

The six-part documentary is based on the book of the same name by Sybrina Fulton and Trayvon’s mother Tracy, along with Suspicion Nation by Lisa Bloom, with its first episode dropping on Monday, July 30th at 10pm.
