People are outraged over GQ’s profile of “outlaw” Johnny Depp

“Stop dramatising his behaviour as though he is some sort of misunderstood hero. He's not.”

Despite the allegations of abuse he continues to deny, Johnny Depp treks on through Hollywood, with his title role in the upcoming Fantastic Beasts 2: The Crimes of Grindelwald, along with a new British GQ cover story. It’s not just the magazine’s devotion of words to an alleged abuser that have many people—including his ex-wife/alleged victim, Amber Heard—pissed off, but moreso the magazine’s framing of Depp’s highly-publicized struggles with “divorce,” “violence,” and “excess” as indicating he’s some sort of “outlaw”:

Heard’s response to the story comes by way of her legal team, specifically in response to the irresponsible oversight of British GQ publishing Depp’s continued denial of the alleged abuse—an issue both parties are legally forbidden from speaking about, despite Depp’s continuing to do otherwise—while also not talking to any witnesses of the abuse: “If GQ had done even a basic investigation into Mr. Depp’s claims, it would have quickly realized that his statements are entirely untrue […] Mr. Depp is shamefully continuing his psychological abuse of Ms. Heard, who has attempted to put a very painful part of her life firmly in her past. One need only look at the physical evidence to draw the proper conclusion.”

As mentioned though, it wasn’t just Heard that recognized the problematic nature of the cover story, with many people online speaking out about the media’s continued coverage of Depp in light of his allegations:

In addition to Depp’s continued talk of these allegations, despite being legally prohibited from doing so:

And if abusers are going to get a platform to deny their allegations, even though they contractually cannot, it’s pretty irresponsible of the platform raising their voice to frame these allegations as a badge of badassery that gives you an “outlaw” vibe:

British GQ has yet to comment on its publishing of this story.
