Bruno Mars finally met the pro wrestler he was named after

The Crooner Bruno meets the Hammerlock Bruno.

August 23, 2017

You could be forgiven for thinking that Bruno Mars is the pop megastar’s real name – but no, Peter Gene Hernandez got his moniker as a boy, when his dad noticed he beared a striking resemblance to pro WWF (now E) Hall of Famer/ pro wrestler Bruno Sammartino. Fast-forward a couple decades, and now the forces of fate have colluded to bring the two generations of famous Brunos together, as per Mars’ Instagram post from last night:

The wrestling Bruno met his namesake during a backstage photo op after the Pittsburgh stop of Mars’ 24K Magic Tour last night. “I was nicknamed after this professional wrestler Bruno Sammartino,” Mars captioned his post, in which he’s holding one of Sammartino’s wrestling belts. “Tonight in Pittsburgh I had the honor of meeting him!”

Sammartino had a lengthy and accomplished pro wrestling career, and is often cited as one of the greatest wrestlers of all time. He held the WWWF World Heavyweight Championship for over 11 years, across two reigns. That’s quite the pedigree! Whether or not this means we’ll be seeing an increase in DDTs and armbars at future Bruno Mars tour stops remains to be seen.
