Taylor Swift donates $113k to LGBTQ+ advocacy group fighting against “bathroom bill”

Is the real Taylor finally standing up?

April 9, 2019

Following a decade-plus of silence on political issues, Taylor Swift continues to use her influence to support and shed light on issues worth fighting for. After endorsing Tennessee democratic candidate Phil Bredesen back in October, Swift has now made a large donation to a Tennessee LGBTQ+ advocacy group in a fight against a number of discriminatory bills passed in her home state.

The Tennessee Equality Project received a $113, 000 USD donation from the singer, whose contribution was also accompanied by a heartfelt handwritten letter. “I’m so inspired by the work you do, specifically in organizing the recent petition of Tennessee faith leaders standing up against the “Slate of Hate” in our state legislature […] I’m so excited that they’re giving all people a place to worship.”

What Swift calls the “Slate of Hate” refers to a collection of recently-passed bills highlighted by the Tennessee Equality Project that have significantly limited LGBTQ+ access and recognition across the state. Specifically, these bills have given adoption agencies permission to discriminate against same sex couples, allowed government agencies to choose contractors based on their anti-discrimination policies, and limited accessibility for transgender patrons to locker rooms and restrooms by deeming these locations “public places” and making them subject to indecent exposure laws.

The “faith leaders” Swift highlights her solidarity with in the letter refers to the hundred-plus religious leaders in Tennessee who, with support from TEP and the Human Rights Campaign, have organized to stand together against the passing of these discriminatory bills. Nick Morrow, an employee of the HRC, couldn’t contain his excitement at Swift’s sudden support:

The passing of these bills may show that the battle is far from over, but at least those fighting it have Taylor’s (loud, influential, and welcome) voice in their corner.
