It’s difficult to think of any of the women slaying between genres, from Rico Nasty and Tina Turner, to Brittany Howard and Valerie June, existing without the omnipresent influence of the extraordinary Betty Davis. The work and impact of the funk queen was commemorated at a screening of Philip Cox’s documentary Betty: They Say I’m Different in Toronto which featured a performance by Betty Davis’ original band Funk House alongside local funk stars SATE, Ammoye, Shakura S’Aida, Mamalia and Nicky Lawrence. For those that were in attendance and those that didn’t make it, A.Side is honoured to bring you this in-depth look at the night, put together by Cultiv8 (produced by Cleo Ellis of Cultiv8) and the organizers of the awesome event.
