16 bands who are more popular than the everyday words they’re named after

October 14, 2014

One of the unique problems facing bands in this century is having a search engine optimized name. Pick something too generic and no one will find you, unless you already have a lot of hype, in which case: rock on Real Estate, Stars, and Girls. But for the rest of us? Finding a search-friendly name is one of the unexpected challenges arising from today’s digital information crunch.

At least, that’s what I thought. Last week I was trying to find some lights for my house and I Googled “lights,” only to find out that Lights, the Canadian electro artist, generates more hits than actual lights. This got me thinking: what other artists with similarly generic names have become more popular than the everyday words they’re named after? Check out the gallery above to see the silly results.
