Q&A: Kongos share their love of The Dude, Philip Seymour Hoffman, and Batman’s nipples

July 31, 2014

As their story goes, Kongos—featuring brothers Johnny, Jesse, Dylan and Danny—are the offspring of ’70s Brit rocker John Kongos. But for all the talk of their royal lineage, the foursome haven’t relied on their bloodlines. Instead, the South African-bred, Phoenix-dwelling combo have carved their own niche built on hard-charging pop hooks, diverse instrumentation (accordion, anyone?) and near-tribal percussion. On the strength of singles like “Come With Me Now,” Kongos have seen a slow and steady rise—and while most of their interviews centre around music, we elected to talk to them about their secondary love. Namely, movies.

So, what’s your fave movie of all time?

The Big Lebowski. Maybe [it’s] a cliché, but it’s the gift that keeps on giving, it just never gets old; every performance has moments of genius. Either that, or the George Clooney Batman movie.

Speaking of Clooney, who’s your favourite actor of all time?

Philip Seymour Hoffman. His versatility is almost unparalleled and even the smallest role can make a movie great. Proof? Along Came Polly.

R.I.P., Philip Seymour. So, we’ve all had traumatic and amazing experiences watching movies. What are some of yours?

[It was] seeing There Will Be Blood at an artsy fartsy theater and having a brilliant movie ruined by an entire audience laughing at totally inappropriate moments, somehow confusing tension as slapstick humor.  Either that or the George Clooney Batman movie.

Fair enough—that Batman suit with nipples is seared into our memories forever. Speaking of forever, Batman Forever had a pretty stellar soundtrack. (See: “Kiss From A Rose.”) What’s your fave movie soundtrack?

Thomas Newman on Unstrung Heroes, before everyone started stealing his style.

Good choice. So, who’d be playing Kongos in the biopic of your life?

George Clooney, Brad Pitt, Orlando Bloom, and Zach Efron because they’re almost as good looking.
