This metal megamix runs through more than 30 years of classic video game songs

December 1, 2014

While it’s not so black and white, metalheads usually tend to be gamers, and we’ve seen our share of video game music covered with juns, chugs and weedles over the years as a result.

Replay: A Metal Tribute to the History of Video Games is in that same vein, but far more comprehensively. At more than 17 minutes long, YouTuber FamilyJules7x takes you through the history of video games, from Pong, Pac Man and Frogger all the way to The Last of Us, which gets the acoustic treatment, and Dark Souls II, for which he dons an ocarina!

It’s full of gems throughout, like the grin-inducing bounce of Sonic of the Hedgehog and the frolicking sway of The Legend of Zelda: The Wind Waker. While watching nearly 20-minutes of some dude in a Triforce shirt shredding in front of a green screen can quickly wear thin, the music stands strong enough on its own to warrant a background play. The sheer volume of jams both new and familiar here is pretty startling, and by the time that Mortal Kombat riff hits you’ll be blinking to the beat of the Konami code.
